Days of Love: Love Yourself

By Erin B.

Have you ever heard the expression “you can’t pour from an empty cup”? Of course you have- we all have!  It is that thing people say to us when we are clearly burning the candles at both ends, living on way too much coffee and not nearly enough sleep, and putting everyone else’s needs before our own.

And usually what we do is laugh and nod and roll our eyes- “I know, I know- gotta find time for that self care!”

And then we go right back to burning the candle at both ends, borrowing energy from later with caffeine and shutting down the part of us that cries for rest, until eventually- we burn out.  Because if we go on like this, the burnout is inevitable. But it doesn’t have to be that way!

Self care does not have to be some elaborate, unattainable thing- it doesn’t have to be an expensive day at the spa or a weekend away or even a bubble bath, if that’s not your thing. (I happen to love bubble baths, so that would be good, quick, inexpensive self care for ME- but its not for everyone!)

Self care simply means listening to what your own body and soul needs and doing your best to give it, just as you, at the drop of a hat, get your kiddo a snack or rub their back when they ask you to.

It can look like getting up 10 minutes early than usual and sitting in the quiet with a cup of tea and just breathing.

It can look like turning off your phone an hour before bedtime and charging it in another room to give your brain time to decompress before sleep.

It can even look like simply saying “no” to something you don’t want to do.

And if you’re not even sure where to start, you can get a jump start on your self care with this 5 Day Self Care Challenge!

Whether you are single or in a relationship, make this the Valentine’s day that you commit first to loving yourself, recharging, and filling your own cup. Because it is only in filling our own cup that we are truly able to pour into others.
